Ally MacLeod resigned as manager shortly after the 1978 World Cup, andĀ Jock Stein, who had won nine consecutiveĀ Scottish league titlesĀ and the European CupĀ as manager ofĀ Celtic, was appointed as his successor.

After failing to qualify for theĀ 1980 European Championship,Ā Scotland qualified for theĀ 1982 FIFA World CupĀ from a tough group includingĀ Sweden,Ā Portugal,Ā IsraelĀ andĀ Northern Ireland, losing just one match in the process.Ā They beatĀ New ZealandĀ 5–2 in their first game at the World Cup, but lost 4–1 to aĀ BrazilĀ team containingĀ Socrates,Ā Zico,Ā EderĀ and FalcĆ£o.Ā Scotland were again eliminated on goal difference, after a 2–2 draw with theĀ Soviet Union.
