The summer of 1991 saw the departure of Everton heroĀ Graeme SharpĀ but the attack was bolstered byĀ Peter BeardsleyĀ who was signed fromĀ LiverpoolĀ andĀ Mo JohnstonĀ fromĀ Rangers.

Despite these changes to the squad, in the 1991-92 season Everton continued to deteriorate, finishing 12th - their lowest finish for more than a decade.

1992-93Ā was the first year of the newĀ FA Premier League, which took over from theĀ Football League First DivisionĀ as the highest division ofĀ English football. However Everton finished 13th, their lowest league finish for over a decade, and the pressure grew upon Howard Kendall.
