In the 1991–92 First Division campaign, QPR finished 11th in the league and were founder members of the newĀ Premier LeagueĀ which began in 1992. Francis oversaw one of QPR's most famous victories, the 4–1 win over leadersĀ Manchester UnitedĀ atĀ Old TraffordĀ broadcast live on terrestrial television onĀ New Years DayĀ 1992.

TheĀ hat-trickĀ scored byĀ Dennis BaileyĀ in that game remains the last time the feat was achieved inĀ league footballĀ at Old Trafford. Many people also saw it as the beginning of the downturn in United's league form that season, as they suffered a severe shortage of goals in the second half of the campaign and were beaten by the league title by Leeds United.
