Scotland qualified for their fifth consecutiveĀ World Cup in 1990Ā by finishing second in their qualifying group, ahead ofĀ France.Ā Scotland were drawn in a group withĀ Costa Rica, Sweden, and Brazil, but the Scots lost 1ā0 to Costa Rica.Ā While they recovered to beat Sweden 2ā1 in their second game, they lost to Brazil in their third match 1ā0 and were again eliminated after the first round.
By a narrow margin, Scotland qualified for theĀ UEFA European ChampionshipĀ for the first time inĀ 1992.Ā A 1ā0 defeat byĀ RomaniaĀ away from home left qualification dependent upon other results, but a 1ā1 draw betweenĀ BulgariaĀ and Romania in the final group match saw Scotland squeeze through.Ā Despite playing well in matches against the Netherlands and Germany and a fine win against theĀ CIS, the team was knocked out at the group stage.Ā
Scotland failed to qualify, however, for theĀ 1994 FIFA World Cup. The team finished fourth in theirĀ qualifying groupĀ behindĀ Italy,Ā SwitzerlandĀ and Portugal. When it became clear that Scotland could not qualify,Ā Andy RoxburghĀ resigned from his position as team manager.
