After missing out onĀ UEFA Euro 1992Ā (despite being unbeaten in qualifying), the Republic of Ireland qualified for theĀ 1994 FIFA World CupĀ (USA '94). The side beat an opponent from the last FIFA World Cup, Italy, in their opening game; they made it to the second round, eventually losing 2–0 to the Netherlands.

In 1996, Ireland finished second behind PortugalĀ inĀ UEFA Euro 1996 qualifying Group 6Ā but narrowly missed out onĀ UEFA Euro 1996Ā after losing by a score of 2–0 a play-off atĀ AnfieldĀ between the two worst group runners-up to the Netherlands, the other worst runner-up, withĀ Patrick KluivertĀ scoring both goals to send his team through.Ā It was Jack Charlton's final game as manager.
