In the 1996/1997 season, Ruud Gullit added several top international players to the side, as ChelseaĀ won the FA Cup in 1997Ā and established themselves as one of England's top sides again.

Gullit was replaced byĀ Gianluca Vialli, who led the team to victory in theĀ League Cup Final, theĀ UEFA Cup Winners' Cup FinalĀ and the UEFA Super CupĀ in 1998, theĀ FA Cup in 2000Ā and their first appearance in theĀ UEFA Champions League. Vialli was sacked in favour ofĀ Claudio Ranieri, who guided Chelsea to theĀ 2002 FA Cup FinalĀ and Champions League qualification in 2002–03.
