Olsen started his training career with Norway with a 6ā1 home victory againstĀ CameroonĀ on 31 October 1990 and ended it on 27 June 1998 after a 0ā1 defeat againstĀ ItalyĀ in the second stage of theĀ 1998 FIFA World Cup.
In theĀ 1994 World CupĀ in the United States, Norway was knocked out at the group stage after a win againstĀ Mexico, a defeat againstĀ ItalyĀ and a draw against theĀ Republic of Ireland. InĀ France 1998, Norway was eliminated by Italy in the first round of the knock out stage after finishing second in their group, having drawn againstĀ MoroccoĀ andĀ ScotlandĀ and won 2ā1 againstĀ Brazil.
