Keegan left Newcastle in January 1997 and was replaced byĀ Kenny Dalglish, however the club endured a largely unsuccessful season with a thirteenth place finish in theĀ 1997–98 FA Premier League, failure to progress beyond the group stages of theĀ 1997–98 UEFA Champions LeagueĀ despite beatingĀ BarcelonaĀ and group winnersĀ Dynamo KievĀ atĀ St James ParkĀ as well as coming from 2–0 down to draw 2–2 withĀ Valery Lobanovsky's team inĀ UkraineĀ and defeat in theĀ 1998 FA Cup Final. Dalglish was replaced as manager early in the following season byĀ Ruud Gullit.

The club once again finished thirteenth in the league and lost theĀ 1999 FA Cup Final. Gullit fell into disagreements with the squad and chairmanĀ Freddy Shepherd, and quit the club four games into theĀ 1999–2000 seasonĀ with the team bottom of the table to be replaced byĀ Bobby Robson.Ā The club managed to reach an FA Cup Semi-final and to stay in the Premier League.

Bobby Robson's first full season as Newcastle manager saw them finish 11th once again - more than high enough to avoid relegation, but not quite high enough to get intoĀ Europe.
