In 1998, DutchmanĀ Dick AdvocaatĀ became the club's first foreign manager.Ā Nine-in-a-row era stalwarts having moved on, Advocaat invested heavily in the team with immediate results, leading the club to their sixth domestic treble. Despite investment in the team, includingĀ Tore Andre FloĀ for a club-record Ā£12 million,Ā European success beyond theĀ Champions LeagueĀ group stages again proved elusive.Ā After a slow start to the following season, Advocaat resigned from his post in December 2001 and was replaced byĀ Alex McLeish.
