In his second appearance on 27 March 1996, he scored his first two international goals in his country's 2ā0 win overĀ Denmark. Altogether Bierhoff scored 37 goals in 70Ā caps, including both goals in the 2ā1 win over theĀ Czech RepublicĀ in theĀ Euro 96 finalĀ after having come on as a substitute.
Bierhoff also played inĀ Euro 2000, and both theĀ 1998Ā andĀ 2002Ā FIFA World Cups. In Germany's opening match of the 2002 tournament at theĀ Sapporo DomeĀ on 1 June, he scored in an 8ā0 win overĀ Saudi Arabia. He made his last appearance for his country on 30 June, when he was brought on during the second half of theĀ 2002 FIFA World Cup finalĀ againstĀ Brazil, but was unable to help the Germans score in the 0ā2 loss.
