ManagerĀ Claudio RanieriĀ was sacked on 31 May 2004 and was replaced byĀ JosĆ© Mourinho. In July 2003, long-time chairmanĀ Ken BatesĀ sold the club to Russian billionaireĀ Roman Abramovich.
Chelsea finished second to the unbeatenĀ ArsenalĀ in theĀ Premier League. In theĀ Champions LeagueĀ Chelsea reached the semi-finals againstĀ AS Monaco, but failed to reach the final, losing 5ā3 on aggregate to the French side. They also exited theĀ FA CupĀ in the fifth round toĀ ArsenalĀ and theĀ Carling CupĀ in the quarter-finals toĀ Aston Villa.
