F.C. Internazionale Milano endured another desperate season, in which it was nowhere close to winning its first league title since 1989. Argentinian coach Héctor Cúper was handed funds to sign several new players in the pre-season, but to finance these transfers he had to sell HernÔn Crespo tonouveau riche Chelsea, leaving Christian Vieri completely without a strike partner. However, the new players mostly proved to be expensive flops and Cúper was sacked after six league games.
His replacement,Ā Alberto Zaccheroni, failed to lead Inter past the Champions League group stages (the low point of the European campaign was a 5-1 home defeat to anĀ ArsenalĀ side that finished the English league season unbeaten) and barely managed to qualify for theĀ Champions LeagueĀ for theĀ next season; he was sacked at the end of the season.Ā LazioĀ coachĀ Roberto ManciniĀ took over, bringing several ex-Lazio players to the club.
PresidentĀ Massimo MorattiĀ also stepped down, formally handing over the power toĀ Giacinto Facchetti, but remained in an ownership position, thus still bankrolling the club.
