HeĀ captainedĀ the team at theĀ finalsĀ and scored in Ukraine's first everĀ World CupĀ win, aĀ 4–0Ā defeat ofĀ Saudi Arabia.Ā He then scored the winning goal from aĀ penalty kickĀ as Ukraine beatĀ TunisiaĀ 1–0Ā to qualify for theĀ second roundĀ where, despite Shevchenko failing with their first kick, Ukraine knocked outĀ SwitzerlandĀ onĀ penalties.Ā Ukraine were then beatenĀ 3–0Ā by eventual championsĀ ItalyĀ at the quarter-final stage.
