The 2008ā09 season wasĀ Manchester United's 17th season in theĀ Premier League, and their 34th consecutive season in the top division ofĀ English football. After winning a third consecutive Premier League title for the second time to equal Liverpool's record of 18 league titles,Ā the team aimed to become the first team to retain the European Cup sinceĀ MilanĀ in1990. However, they were beaten 2ā0 byĀ BarcelonaĀ in theĀ finalĀ at theĀ Stadio OlimpicoĀ inĀ RomeĀ on 27 May 2009.
In December 2008, the club became the first English side to win theĀ FIFA Club World CupĀ when they beatĀ LDU QuitoĀ 1ā0 in theĀ final.Ā Two months later, on 1 March 2009, the club added theĀ 2008ā09 League CupĀ to their trophy cabinet with a 4ā1penalty shootoutĀ win overĀ Tottenham HotspurĀ after a goalless 120 minutes in theĀ final.
United secured a third consecutive Premier League with a goalless draw at home toĀ ArsenalĀ on 16 May 2009. This made them the first team ever to win three consecutive English top flight titles on two separate occasions, having previously done so betweenĀ 1999Ā andĀ 2001.
