Near the end of the summer of 2009, the United States lost 2ā1 to Mexico at Estadio Azteca. On October 10, the U.S. secured qualification to the 2010 World Cup with a 3ā2 win over Honduras. Four days later, the U.S. finished in first place in the group with a 2ā2 tie against Costa Rica.
