Chelsea's victory in theĀ 2011–12 UEFA Champions LeagueĀ for the first time in their history qualified them for the season'sĀ UEFA Super CupĀ andĀ FIFA Club World Cup, although through finishing third in their Champions League group Chelsea competed in theĀ UEFA Europa LeagueĀ for the first time since the 2002–03 season – then known as theĀ UEFA Cup.

On 13 June 2012,Ā Roberto Di MatteoĀ signed a two-year contract, becoming Chelsea's permanent manager,Ā having been appointed asĀ interim managerĀ after the sacking ofĀ AndrĆ© Villas-BoasĀ during theĀ 2011–12 season.Ā However, on 21 November 2012,Ā Di MatteoĀ was sackedĀ after a 3–0 loss away toĀ JuventusĀ in theĀ UEFA Champions League, withĀ Rafael BenĆ­tezĀ replacing him asĀ interim managerĀ until the end of the season.Ā 

On 15 May 2013, Chelsea won their first and only silverware of the season, winning theĀ Europa League finalĀ against Portuguese sideĀ Benfica. They finished theĀ Premier LeagueĀ season in third place.
