From August to September 2011, the team was ranked number 1 in theĀ FIFA World Rankings, thus becoming the second national football team, after Spain, to top the rankings without previously winning a World Cup.

Netherlands was placed in Group B along withĀ Germany,Ā Portugal, andĀ Denmark, thus making it theĀ Group of Death.
