The team was founded in 1959 and joinedĀ FIFAĀ in 1969. In the past, they have also frequently featured in the Malaysian league and cup competitions asĀ one of the state representative sides.
TheĀ Brunei State Football Amateur AssociationĀ was formed on 15 March 1956. In 1993, the word "Amateur" was dropped, and they were known as the Brunei Football Association. Brunei's experience of international football has been more or less restricted to regional Asian competitions, such as theĀ Southeast Asian GamesĀ and theĀ AFF Championship. So far, Brunei has entered theĀ FIFA World Cup qualifiersĀ only four times, inĀ 1986,Ā 2002,Ā 2018Ā andĀ 2022. On these occasions, they did not qualify for the competition. They have made five appearances in theĀ AFC Asian Cup qualifiers, but they have never passed the first qualification round.
