The club was initially formed by students from Mittweida as Chemnitzer SC Britannia on 2 December 1899.Ā Chemnitzer FC was formed from the collapse of that club in 1966 and after German reunification in 1990, Chemnitzer FC qualified for the 2. Bundesliga at the end of the 1990–91 NOFV-Oberliga their highest league league position today.

This is history is representedĀ by a "'99 '66 '90" patch on the back of the shirt.
