On 4 January 2016, BenĆtez's departure was announced along with the promotion ofĀ Zinedine ZidaneĀ to his first head coaching role.Ā Zidane previously worked as assistant to BenĆtez's predecessor Carlo Ancelotti and, since 2014, had occupied the helm of reserve teamĀ Real Madrid Castilla.Ā Zidane's coaching debut for Madrid was marked by a 5ā0 home victory overĀ DeportivoĀ in La Liga on 9 January 2016 withĀ Gareth BaleĀ scoring a hat-trick.
