After barely avoiding relegation from the Bundesliga in theĀ 2014–15 season, Stuttgart were relegated to theĀ 2. BundesligaĀ in theĀ 2015–16 seasonĀ after finishing in 17th place, having been unable to lift themselves out of the bottom three positions until the end of the season.Ā 

Following matchday 13, a home match against FC Augsburg and their second consecutive 4–0 loss, Stuttgart decided to terminateĀ Alexander Zorniger's contract and appointedĀ Jürgen KramnyĀ as their manager for an indefinite period. After Stuttgart were relegated to theĀ 2. Bundesliga, Wahler resigned as president on 15 May 2016.Ā Kramny was subsequently sacked as coach.
