The 2016ā17 season saw huge improvements in both results and performances. Despite an inconsistent start, the team saw a significant improvement from October onwards which saw them secure a 6th-place finish. They entered theĀ play-offs, but lost to Reading 2ā1 on aggregate in the semi-final.Ā
During this time, club owner Shahid Khan's sonĀ Tony KhanĀ was named as Vice Chairman and Director of Football Operations, and he also holds the roles of General Manager and Sporting Director.Ā Despite a slow start to the following season, the club went on a club-record 23 game unbeaten run in the league which led to a 3rd-place finish, narrowly missing out automatic promotion.Ā
The team went on to win theĀ EFL Championship play-off finalĀ againstĀ Aston VillaĀ to return to the Premier League on 26 May 2018.
