The Northern Ireland teamĀ qualifiedĀ for its first everĀ UEFA European Championship,Ā Euro 2016Ā in France, after beatingĀ GreeceĀ 3–1 at Windsor Park on 8 October 2015.Ā At the tournament, Northern Ireland were beaten 1-0 byĀ PolandĀ on 20 June 2016 followed by a 2–0 win againstĀ UkraineĀ on 16 June 2016 and finally a 1-0 loss againstĀ GermanyĀ in the group stage.

That was enough to qualify for a Round of 16 spot where they lost 1-0 toĀ WalesĀ due to an unfortunate own goal by Gareth McAuley.
