Originally founded in 1899 as a gymnastics club, Hoffenheim came into being in their modern form in 1945. A fifth division side in 2000, the club rapidly advanced through theĀ German football league systemĀ with the financial backing of alumnus and software mogulĀ Dietmar Hopp, and in 2008 Hoffenheim was promoted to the top tierĀ Bundesliga. Despite never winning a major trophy, they have experienced success. In the 2017–18 season, Hoffenheim finished third in theĀ BundesligaĀ (their best to date), qualifying for theĀ UEFA Champions LeagueĀ group stage for the first time.

Since 2009, Hoffenheim have played their home games at theĀ Rhein-Neckar-ArenaĀ (known as PreZero Arena for sponsorship reasons), having previously played at theĀ Dietmar-Hopp-StadionĀ from 1999.
