The club's finances were heavily impacted by theĀ COVID pandemic, with the parent companyĀ King Power International GroupĀ being in the travel retail (DF&TR) sector. The club were restricted in their spending during the 2022 summer transfer market, while there were also concerns over breachingĀ Financial Fair PlayĀ regulations.

In addition to this, in the summer of 2021 Leicester went away from their model of selling a key asset and spent more than Ā£50 million on new players, dramatically increasing their wages-to-turnover ratio. Failure to qualify for European football in the proceeding season (2021–22) was an additional factor in reduced spending. At the same time, the club were also continuing to balance investment in infrastructure, to better compete with theĀ Premier League's 'big six' in the long term.

Manager Rodgers left the club on 2 April 2023 via mutual consent, with ten games remaining and the team in the relegation zone.Ā Dean SmithĀ was appointed as his replacement until the end of the season.Ā

On 28 May, despite a 2–1 home win over West Ham United, Leicester City were relegated as a consequence of Everton's 1–0 home victory over AFC Bournemouth. This ended the club's nine-year stint in the Premier League, making them only the second former Premier League champions to be relegated from the league since it began in 1992–93, following Blackburn Rovers in 1998–99.
