By failing to register a single goal at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations and by missing out on Germany 2006, local supporters had become increasingly unhappy with the decline in performance of the national team. In light of these poor performances it was decided that the hiring of a more experienced manager was essential. Former World Cup-winnerĀ andĀ Brazilian national teamĀ coachĀ Carlos Alberto ParreiraĀ was approached for the job and he accepted.
He signed a R100 million contract covering four years. His term as manager started 1 January 2007 targeting theĀ 2010 FIFA World Cup, which South Africa had been awarded the right to host, becoming the first African nation to ever host world football's showpiece.
